This is a group of people, from Albuquerque agencies, who helped in founding the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (S.A.N.E.) Program. The group began meeting, in March of 1995, to create this program to serve the greater Albuquerque area.

The program provides kind and gentle care for a sexual assault victim. The program offers a victim privacy and timely treatment in a calm, quiet and safe setting. Treatment is provided by nurses and rape crisis advocates.

How The Program Works

A victim of sexual assault or their friends and family can call the Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center at 266-7711. An advocate will inform them of the program's location and what to do.

A nurse and rape crisis Advocate will meet the victim.

The nurse will take the victim's history, check for injuries, do a pregnancy test, evidence kit (swabs, gauze, and test tubes for specimen collection), and provide medication for infection and pregnancy prevention.

The rape crisis advocate will provide emotional support and information to the victim and their friends and family during the exam process.

After the exam, the victim can shower in a private bath and will be provided a change of clothing if their clothes are held as evidence.

If the victim wishes, the police will take a report.

Mission

To avoid further trauma for all sexual assault victims in the health care environment and improve long term outcomes.

Philosophy

To offer total care in managing and reducing the effects of rape in our community.
